Before commencing mobile exhaust fitting it is useful to know a little more about the make up and configuration of an exhaust pipe.

The full length of an exhaust pipe will run from the engine all the way to the the end of the visible tailpipe. The exhaust pipe isn't just one pipe but a series of pipes each of which performs a slightly different function. The good thing about the exhaust being built up of sections is that when problems arise it won't often be the whole pipe with the issues but more likely one or possibly two sections of the exhaust pipe that will need replacing. Unless you have a very old car or very corroded exhaust pipe where the pipe sections have merged together making separation almost impossible.

There are a number of interchangeable terms you will come across when referring to sections or parts of the exhaust system.  Most however, will agree that there are three distinct sections, which are the exhaust manifold, the catalytic converter, and the silencer. When breaking these down further you will come across terms such as the front pipe, resonator, middle section, connecting pipe, rear box and tail pipe.

Sticking to the main section the exhaust manifold is the section which is connected to the engine itself to catch the post combustion gases. The catalytic converter is connected to this to filter/reduce the type and amount of gas emissions. A section of middle piping then connects the catalytic convertor to the resonator which is the first section of a two part noise reduction system, which is linked to the muffler before connecting to the last section of tail pipe.

So how do you know you're in need to a mobile exhaust replacement in Reading? What are the indicators that you may have some issue with your exhaust system? The most popular comments when we are contacted with concerns around the exhaust system are that a new sound or noise is being created by their car and they suspect it is their exhaust. Sometimes a car owner can be very confident in identifying the area of the noise if the noise is present when the car is idling. It's easy to get out of the vehicle when it is stationary and look and listen whilst walking around the vehicle to then pinpoint where a particular sound is coming from.

It's a lot less easy if you notice certain noises at certain speeds when driving the vehicle. Some of the common noise descriptions include a rattle or knocking - which is a good indicator that part of the exhaust system is loosening or has come loose. Sometimes hissing or noticing that the sound from the exhaust is loader than normal are also signs that there is something not right.

There are also visible clues regarding the health of your exhaust system. If you notice smoke coming from your tail pipe this indicates there is an issue with the filtration system. More obvious is if you can see that your exhaust pipe is closer to the ground, this will often accompany the knocking noise and means that a section of all of the exhaust system is becoming detached from the car's undercarriage which will suffer further damage over speed bumps.
