Mobile alternator repairs
Mobile Alternator Replacement Across Reading
Your alternator keeps the battery charged while the engine is running, and powers the lights, wipers, heater fan and everything else electrical on the move. When it starts to fail, the battery covers the shortfall until it runs flat. That usually means a car that won’t start in the morning, or one that cuts out partway through a journey.
As a mobile mechanic, we come to you in Reading and the surrounding towns, test the battery and charging system where the car is parked, and tell you what we’ve found before any work starts. If the alternator is the problem, we’ll quote to replace it. If it turns out to be something simpler, such as a slipping belt or a battery at the end of its life, we’ll tell you that instead.
Had a jump start but the battery light is still on? Keep journeys short and call us on 0118 338 5138. The longer a failing alternator is left, the more likely you are to end up stranded.
Know the signs
Signs Your Alternator Is Failing
Any of these on its own is worth getting checked. Two or more together usually point to the charging system.
-
Battery warning light
The battery-shaped light on the dashboard usually means the charging system isn’t putting out what it should, rather than a fault with the battery itself.
-
A battery that keeps going flat
Needing a jump start every few days, or a new battery that goes flat quickly, suggests the battery isn’t being charged while you drive.
-
Dim or flickering lights
Headlights or dashboard lights that dim at idle and brighten when you rev the engine can be a sign of low charging output.
-
Electrics playing up
Slow electric windows, a radio that keeps resetting, or warning lights that come and go for no obvious reason.
-
Whining or grinding noise
A worn bearing inside the alternator often whines or grinds, and the noise rises and falls with engine speed.
-
A hot or burning smell
A hot electrical smell, or burning rubber from a slipping drive belt, needs checking straight away.
Test first, then replace
It Isn’t Always the Alternator
A battery light or a flat battery doesn’t automatically mean a new alternator. The same symptoms can come from:
- A battery that has reached the end of its life
- A worn or slipping auxiliary drive belt, or a tired belt tensioner
- Loose or corroded battery terminals and earth straps
- A wiring fault in the charging circuit
- Something draining the battery while the car is parked
That’s why we test before we replace anything. Checking the battery and charging output is quick, and it means you only pay for the part that has actually failed.
If it’s the battery, our car battery replacement service has you covered. For electrical faults that take more tracing, we use mobile diagnostics to find the cause.

FAQs
Alternator Questions We’re Often Asked
Is it my battery or my alternator?
If the car starts after a jump but the battery light stays on, or the battery goes flat again within a day or two, the charging system is the likely cause. A battery that is simply worn out tends to struggle to start the car, even though the charging system is working normally. We test both, so you know for certain before paying for anything.
Can I drive with a failing alternator?
Only for a short while. Once the alternator stops charging, the car runs on the battery alone and will cut out when the battery is drained, which could happen in traffic. If the battery light comes on while you’re driving, switch off anything you don’t need, such as the heated rear screen and air con, and get the car checked as soon as you can.
Can you replace an alternator at my home?
Often, yes. We come to your home, your workplace, or wherever the car has stopped across Reading. How easy the alternator is to reach varies a lot from car to car, so we’ll tell you when we quote whether yours can be done on the spot.
How much does alternator replacement cost?
It depends on the vehicle and the part, which is why we quote each job individually. Send us your registration and what the car is doing, and we’ll give you a free quote before any work starts.
Do you replace alternators on vans?
Yes. We work on cars and vans of all makes. See our van mechanic service for more on the van work we do.
