When to recharge

As a rule of thumb, expect to need an air con recharge every one to three years. That’s a wide range, because it depends on how much you drive and how hard you use the air con.
As well as the cooling getting weaker, you may notice a slightly unpleasant musty smell inside the car. That’s another sign your air con is due a recharge.
How it works
How Car Air Conditioning Works
Most people think of air con as cooling, but it’s short for air conditioning: it changes the condition of the air. What really sets it apart from a heater or a fan is that it takes moisture out of the air.
The system has three main parts: the compressor, the condenser and the evaporator. Much like a fridge, a refrigerant is pumped round a loop of high and low pressure. Older cars use R134a (HFC-134a) and newer models use R1234yf (HFO-1234yf). As the pressure changes, the refrigerant turns from gas to liquid and back again, giving off heat at one point in the loop and absorbing it at another.
The compressor, driven by the engine, squeezes the refrigerant into a high-pressure gas and pumps it to the condenser at the front of the car, which cools it into a liquid. The liquid then passes to the evaporator behind the dashboard, where the pressure drops and it turns back into a gas, drawing heat out of the air around it. The fans blow that cooler, drier air into the car, and the moisture taken out of it drips away underneath as water.

If you’ve ever replaced a fridge freezer, you’ll know it isn’t something your local scrap merchant will take. Refrigerants harm the environment if they aren’t handled properly, and car manufacturers have moved to gases with a lower environmental impact.
Newer cars use R1234yf, which costs more than the older R134a. Each car’s air con is designed for one type of gas and can’t take the other, so even if you’d happily pay more to reduce your impact, the car decides. Give us your number plate and we’ll know which gas your car needs.
Using your air con doesn’t harm the environment, because the only thing it gives off is water. In winter it’s an excellent way to keep moisture off the inside of the windscreen, which improves your visibility.

Frequently Asked Aircon Regas Questions
When should I regas my aircon?
If your air conditioning just isn’t cooling as well as it normally does, a recharge is most likely the reason. We’ll check that this is the cause, then top up the system with refrigerant to get it working normally again, and clean the air or pollen filters if they need it.
How long does an aircon regas take?
It depends on the vehicle. Older cars are slightly quicker than newer ones that use a different gas, and each car holds a different amount of refrigerant, but around an hour is average. Once we have your vehicle details we can give you a better estimate.
What are the benefits of an air con recharge?
In summer, a full recharge lets the car cool down properly, so driving is far more comfortable than with the windows down.
In winter, taking the moisture out of the air clears the windscreen faster, so it’s quicker and safer to set off.
